The Legend of the Willow Pattern Plate

Long, long ago in China lived a mandarin and his daughter Koong-se. They lived in a palace. Koong-se’s father, the mandarin, wanted her to marry a rich Duke but Koong-se was in love with Chang. The mandarin built a fence around Koong-se and Chang couldn’t meet her. So Chang dressed up as a servant. The two lovers escaped but Chang and Koong-se were caught by the mandarin. So he killed both of them. The gods turned them into lovely doves.
